Multicultural Committee

The Multicultural Committee was formed to introduce more multicultural perspectives into our children's experiences at Los Cerritos Elementary. The committee’s work focuses on introducing students to cultural traditions, role models, and history that reflect the school’s diversity.

The committee organizes book readings focused on the work of authors of color or books about families and communities of color, invites role models from diverse communities to school, and plans events and activities that celebrate diversity such as Taste of Los Cerritos, which allows families to taste food from different cultures, the Living Black History project, and constructing a community altar for Dia de los Muertos  (Day of the Dead).  The committee also sponsors a table at the annual Handmade Holiday event that recognizes and celebrates Kwanzaa and Hanukah. Through each of these activities the committee works to foster an inclusive environment in which children can see themselves and their families and communities reflected and celebrated. 

In November, Los Cerritos and the Multicultural Committee are recognizing Indigenous Peoples in America. This week a parent volunteer will visit your child’s class and read the book ENCOUNTER, which is a story about an indigenous fisher person and a European sailor.

We always need volunteers and welcome anyone who wants to help celebrate Los Cerritos’ diversity!
